THE HIDDEN MANNA

REV 2:17 `He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.'
In these last studies there has been unusual interest in the “hidden manna” so rather than spend more time on that in the studies I will try to give an outline here.
EXO 16:32] Then Moses said, "This is what the LORD has commanded, `Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'" [33] And Moses said to Aaron, "Take a jar and put an omerful of manna in it, and place it before the LORD, to be kept throughout your generations." [34] As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the Testimony, to be kept.
DEUT 8: 3 "And He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.
DEUT 8:16 "In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.
HEB 9:3 And behind the second veil, there was a tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies, [4] having a golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron's rod which budded, and the tables of the covenant.
This golden jar that held the manna was hidden within the Ark of the Covenant. This manna was to be a reminder to Israel of their total dependence upon God when He brought them out of bondage. The manna never failed until they crossed over into Canaan and harvested the land. It was a testimony to Israel that man cannot live by natural bread alone. Man can only continue to live by every word (or everything) that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
In Psalms the manna is called “Angels food”. The Angels live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. That becomes their food. Jesus also testified that His food was to do the will of God. That was food that the disciples knew nothing about because it was hidden from them.  Since this is just an outline we will not look at every verse concerning the manna. Our purpose is to make an application of the hidden manna for us in a simple and open way so we can make the application personally.
The Tabernacle is the “temple of God and the place of His habitation” as He traveled with His people over this earth. In the Most Holy Place there was the Ark of the Covenant that was the exact place of His manifested Presence, between the two Cherubim that were one piece with the Mercy Seat. Inside the Ark, under the mercy seat, along with the Law of Moses and Aaron’s rod that budded was the golden jar that held the Manna. The tabernacle is also a picture of man. He has an “outer court” (his body), “a holy place” (his soul) and “a most holy place” (his spirit) where God dwells.
Within man’s spirit there is the Ark of God which is the Lord Jesus Christ, the tables of the covenant, (the laws of God), the authority of God (rod that budded) and this jar that holds the manna. Of course this is just one viewpoint of the manna but shows the location as man’s new spirit.
JOHN 6:31] "Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, `HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.'" [32] Jesus therefore said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. [33] "For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world." [34] They said therefore to Him, "Lord, evermore give us this bread." [35] Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst
JOHN 6:48] "I am the bread of life. [49] "Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. [50] "This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. [51] "I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread also which I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh." ( study John 6: 30-58)
Since we have already been given the interpretation of manna in the word of God we must not deviate from that. Manna speaks to us of every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. It is also fulfilled in the Living Word of God, Himself. He is the true manna that came down out of heaven from God. He is what we eat to live forever. Doing His will is our food that is hidden from the world. The manna confirms to us that we live in total dependence upon God and in that He sustains our life and feeds us with Angel’s food. Eating of this hidden food is the key to resurrection. V54
Shallow Christianity is the result of not having deep roots into God’s word. If we lack depth we will not touch the depths of those we minister to. Spirit speaks to spirit. Deep calls out to deep. The superficial can only satisfy the superficial but those who have depth will not be satisfied with the superficial. To hear a sermonette is one thing, to eat of the Living Word of God is quite another.
Since the hidden manna is a Kingdom truth it has it’s reality within the Kingdom of God. Outside the Kingdom it is hidden. Therefore, the method Jesus used to speak of these things was with parables and word pictures. MARK 4:5 "And other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil. [6] "And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
This parable speaks to us of a very shallow life and experience which is common in the church. This example will help us throw light upon the hidden manna. Roots grow beneath the soil and are hidden but they represent the very life source of the plant. Leaves are visible and grow above the ground and represent the “manifested life”. Roots represent the “hidden life”. One of the frustrations of reading Jesus’ words is that we know there is a depth that is not revealed and it escapes our understanding.
One of the problems with shallow Christianity is that there is plenty of apparent life showing but there is very little depth of secret or hidden life with God. There is visible growth upward (seen in the leaves) but there is not much growth downward within the roots. It is because of the lack of deep roots that many dry up in times of heat and trials. This type of superficial Christianity is common.
JER 17:7] "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD   And whose trust IS the LORD. [8] "For he will be like a tree planted by the water,  That extends its roots by a stream  And will not fear when the heat comes;  But its leaves will be green,  And it will not be anxious in a year of drought  Nor cease to yield fruit.
The principle is this; If the root is exposed the leaves will wither. God has imparted to each one of us a new spiritual life that must be guarded. To expose it is to damage it. This hidden spiritual life is hidden from view and is secret. It could be related to the Hidden manna!  John 6 is hidden Manna.
This seems like a paradox because we have been baptized into one body by the Holy Spirit and joined to other members by joints and ligaments. How could it be God’s intention to have a “secret life” with Him, in His ark? How could this possibly “feed us”?  If we use the tree and it’s roots and it’s leaves as a picture we could ask; How much hidden life do you have with God in comparison to the exposed, visible life you have with the world or with the body of Christ?
We are certainly not saying the exposed life is wrong or that it will do you any harm. Our point is this; There must be plenty of root to support the leaves. If all our emphasis is upon the outward life of fellowship and evangelism and the inner life is shallow, that will cause superficial life and ministry.
In Math 5 and 6 Jesus taught a certain balance as it applies to the Kingdom of God. MATH 5:14] "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.---- [16] "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. This is speaking about the exposed visible life that is supposed to be seen by all. This is the leaves part of our life and is certainly not an offence to God.
MT 6:1 "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
MT 6:2 "When therefore you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. [3] "But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing [4] that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
MATH 6:5 "And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, in order to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. [6] "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
This is the “roots” part of our life which is unexposed, secret and hidden. It is clear that this is something that agrees with the Father’s heart. Eating of the True Manna of John 6 is not a group experience.
JOHN 6:57] "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me. [58] "This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate, and died, he who eats this bread shall live forever." The superficial know little of this Bread.
However, when we are Christians we are supposed to be quick to give an answer for the Hope that lies within us. Public testimony is all part of being Christian even if it is the “leaves part”. On the other hand there are secret virtues and an inner life that should not be exposed. This is the same as exposing the roots and will eventually affect the leaves of your testimony.
“ A big mouth bloweth much dust.” “ A big mouth exposes the roots”.
2 COR 12:2] I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago--whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, God knows--such a man was caught up to the third heaven. [3] And I know how such a man--whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows-- [4] was caught up into Paradise, and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak.
Paul had an experience which as far as we know he kept secret for 14 years. He doesn’t mention it in his other letters. Evidently God didn’t want him speaking about it because that would have exposed his hidden life. He wasn’t permitted to speak about what he saw but he was able to reveal enough so they would know why he had a thorn in the flesh. Paul kept his roots down into God. He could boast in the leaves without exposing the root.
Sometimes we wonder why certain people manifested so much power while others didn’t. We say God is no respecter of persons but it doesn’t appear that all manifest the same power. For example: Kathryn Kullman had an incredible manifestation of power and gifts. Her testimony was that she had a hidden life with God.
In Isa 39 Hezekiah was sick but recovered. He was sent letters and gifts from the heathen king which he received with gladness. Then Hezekiah exposed all his hidden treasure and displayed everything. ISA 39:5] Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD of hosts, [6] `Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and all that your fathers have laid up in store to this day shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,' says the LORD.
The lesson is simple: Expose it and lose it. The extent that we expose the hidden things to others is the measure of how much we lose of our hidden life. There are a few examples where Jesus healed somebody and told them to tell no one. On other occasions He said to go and tell what great things God had done. How do we know when it is secret and when it is for public testimony? Is it a hidden thing done in the inner life or is an outer thing that is done in the body for all to see? PSA 25:14] The secret
of the LORD is for those who fear Him,  And He will make them know His covenant.
The secret things also apply to our work. We can take out a big add and make propaganda and declare on the house tops what has been accomplished but it is better to speak of it secretly to God and let God shout it from the house tops if He thinks that is necessary. It may be true that God expects us to disclose certain things but it is wise to make sure first.
Fellowship is the life blood of Christian, church and body life and God expects that life to flow from one member to another. I have been in meetings where His life was rising up in one member that needed to be shared but another member dominated the meeting with superficial conversation or Bible verses so that no life was shared. Because of a super shallow life of one member, the deeper life of another was left hidden, when it could have provided revelation and strength to others.
MAT 13:52] And He said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old."
PSA 51:6] Behold, Thou dost desire truth in the innermost being,  And in the hidden part Thou wilt make me know wisdom.
The superficial spiritual life rules out the possibility of spiritual progress. It is the overcomer to whom Jesus will give of that hidden manna! That is personal and just for you. The test is to see if you can keep it secret and hidden.
DEUT 29:29 "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.
While there are many secret and hidden things in God and many mysteries that are not openly revealed, He is sharing some things to those who are seeking Him. These are the secret things that are revealed in God’s time. God revealed secrets to Daniel but told him to seal it up until a later time.
There are certain eternal secrets and mysteries and hidden things that God has promised to reveal to the overcomer. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna. Since this manna is hidden within the Ark it is revealed to those who are one with Him. Those who sit with Him and rule with Him will know of eternal things and intimate things with Him. There is definitely a reason to overcome!
JOHN 6:55] "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. [56] "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. [57] "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also shall live because of Me.
JOHN 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
What we eat is the Living and Eternal Word of God Who came down out of heaven. What was visible was the man, Christ Jesus. What was hidden was The Word of God, Who was God.
JOHN 6:51] "I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever; and the bread also which I shall give for the life of the world is My flesh." JN 6:52 The Jews therefore began to argue with one another, saying, "How can this man give us His flesh to eat?" [53] Jesus therefore said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.
JOHN 6:66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew, and were not walking with Him anymore. [67] Jesus said therefore to the twelve, "You do not want to go away also, do you?" [68] Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. [69] "And we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God."
JOHN 6:65] And He was saying, "For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me, unless it has been granted him from the Father."
Only God can reveal the Manna that is hidden in the Lord Jesus Christ!
